Traveling, especially abroad, exposes our gut & immune
system to different micro-organisms, often for the first time. Therefore it is
not surprising that one of the commonest problems during travel is an upset
stomach - ranging from mild pains to profuse and frequent diarrhoea. In fact
this is so common that there are numerous well known idioms such as -
Montezuma's revenge, the Mexican two-step, the Tokyo trots, the Rangoon
runs, and the Delhi belly !
While many cases of travellers'
diarrhoea are relatively mild and self-limiting, a third of all sufferers have
to take to their beds - and may even be forced to return home. The bad news is,
symptoms can drag on and on, and affect their lives for several months.
The organisms generally responsible for holiday tummy
are those that we have limited immunity to, including strains of E.Coli,
Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella and Shigella. These organisms release toxins
which affect the small intestines. As a result, the natural balance of the
"beneficial" bacteria is disrupted. They are most commonly picked up
from food or drinking water.
It is, therefore, important to quickly re-establish the
proper bowel microbial flora in the treatment of such diarrhoea. Taking Bio-Kult
will help restore the correct balance of beneficial bacteria within the
gastrointestinal tract. Bio-Kult also helps to protect against the risk of
developing Traveller's Diarrhoea on holiday by:
- Colonising the gut thereby rapidly re-acidifying the
environment and slowing down multiplication of acid-sensitive harmful
bacteria.
- Secreting natural antibiotics which help to suppress
E. Coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococci and Bacillus organisms.
- Competing with harmful bacteria for both nutrients
and space on the intestinal wall. This effectively starves the harmful
bacteria of their food source and crowds them out so that they pass through
the intestine without gaining a foothold.
- Stimulating production of interferon, a natural
antiviral agent which helps to protect against viral intestinal infections.
In order to maintain a high population
of "benefical" bacteria in the gut it is advisable to start taking
Bio-Kult two weeks before departure, and continue to use it on a daily basis
while away. Continual use of Bio-Kult will help to reduce any potential symptoms
of infection.
Because diarrhoea flushes intestinal
bacteria, both good and bad, from the bowel, it increases the risk of a second
infection taking hold. Taking Bio-Kult could also help to reduce the risk of new
infections.
